Joseph, a 13-year-old learner at Doucecroft School, has taken a stand for road safety by writing a letter to Councillor Lewis Barber, urging action for a pedestrian crossing on the busy main road outside the school. In the letter, Joseph also highlighted concerns about a road sign that obscures pedestrians’ vision of oncoming traffic, making it even more difficult to cross safely.

In response, Councillor Barber has given his support and visited the school today to discuss the issue further with learners and staff. During the visit, Joseph spoke with the Councillor confidently and articulately, expressing his concerns with real enthusiasm.

Doucecroft School is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for autistic children and young people. The road outside presents a daily challenge for learners, families, and staff, making road safety a key priority.

The visit also provided an opportunity for other learners to share their experiences and discuss how a pedestrian crossing could improve safety for the whole community.
